Christie Contemporary is pleased to present Black Matter, on view from October 19 through November 16, with an opening reception on Friday, October 25, featuring the work of Mathieu Gaudet and Luce Meunier.
Black is both deliberate and decisive. In ranging modes of abstraction, Mathieu Gaudet and Luce Meunier variably insist and liberate its density. Mathieu Gaudet forges opaque black surfaces on sculptural forms with multiple layers of black gesso and charring, while Luce Meunier unleashes inky black gestures on canvas through methods of aqueous transfer and absorption. The preponderance of black across the assembled works sets up an environmental dynamic of movement and stillness, fluidity and fixity, depth and contour.
Artist Luce Meunier would like to gratefully acknowledge the assistance of The Canada Council for the Arts.
