An inside, a surface, an outside: these are the simple assessments engaged when apprehending an object. Where the inside and the outside might be seen to equally exert the delineation of a form, the particularity of a surface creates an active membrane that can shift between barrier and access point, impenetrability and porosity. The works by James Carl, Erin Vincent and Tim Whiten quote familiar forms, where Marla Hlady, Garrett Lockhart and Kelly Wallace evolve novel constructions. For each of them, in building a seam between inside and outside, attention concentrates at what an object may contain. Its volume might just outstrip the limits of its external perimeter.
